Dorren Lee Signs on to two American projects
The acclaimed Canadian star will start work stateside, in the coming months.
Lee will will start filming stateside on the first project in the coming months.
As is being noted more than ever, the industry finds moving towards positive change after an awards-season dominated by more positive inclusion and representation of Asian culture (notably spearheaded by Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once”). As our editors continue to share, Lee’s casting reinforces the importance of reinforcing AAPI screen representation across American projects, further reinforced this week with the success of Netflix's 'Beef' with Ali Wong and Oscar-nominee Steven Yeun.
Lee, who impressively worked with Oscar-winning filmmaker J. Miles Dale, is well known to fans for her work in the aforementioned ‘Star Trek’ universe as well as ‘Diggstown’ and CW’s ‘Kung Fu.’
Producers remain tight-lipped but our editors have been advised the projects will likely be hitting the awards-circuit come 2024.
In the first project, Lee will play a leading role in a drama mystery-thriller that recounts a collective catastrophe which unites a group of people from vastly different walks of life, turning regrets into transformations and realizing the preciousness of life.
The second project is a comedy series about the make-up and beauty industry, to be filmed in Florida.
As Lee’s representatives shared, “Dorren is one of the most exciting Canadian exports. She brings a much-needed freshness to the industry, being part of the wave of actors to break stereotypes and reinforcing authentic storytelling for the AAPI community.”
In a statement, Lee shared “I’m energized to be a part of these projects that put authenticity at the forefront of their storytelling. It’s as simple as casting in a way that represents what a lot of people see on a day-to-day basis when they step outside their door. I think audiences are gravitating towards that and they want to see creative and genuine storytelling.”
