DUE TO COVID-19 SPIKE IN SAN JOSE, CA, HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS RECEIVE MASKS FROM NEPAL AND KENYA
Two Non-Profits Joining Forces to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 Locally and Internationally
HomeFirst Services has sheltered and fed nearly half of the 10,000 homeless individuals in Santa Clara County. Since COVID-19 hit, the organization has opened four new shelters and continues to ensure that critical services are provided to the County’s most vulnerable unhoused residents. Meanwhile overseas, The Global Uplift Project has made and distributed 44,400 masks for Nepal, Kenya, Tanzania, and starting now, the United States.
"If there were ever a time to think globally and act locally, it is now," said Andrea Urton, CEO of HomeFirst Services in San Jose, CA. Today, Urton's wise words are being put into action thanks to the international community. The Global Uplift Project has pivoted their sewing centers in Nepal and Kenya to not only protect their own communities, but also the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Santa Clara County. The first shipment of 1,000 masks arrived today to HomeFirst Services. Both organizations need donations to continue such vital work during COVID-19, both locally and internationally. The links to their donation platforms are listed below.

About HomeFirst Services and The Global Uplift Project
HomeFirst Services
HomeFirst Services is a leading provider of services, shelter, and housing opportunities to the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Santa Clara County. We serve more than 6,000 adults, veterans, families, and youth each year at seven locations including our Boccardo Reception Center, which is the county’s largest homeless services center. With 40 years experience, we’ve learned that everyone has the potential to get housed and stay housed. We are relentlessly focused on eliminating barriers to housing and creating stability for everyone we serve.
The Global Uplift Project
The Global Uplift Project’s (TGUP) mission is to literally Uplift humanity by improving the capacity for self-development among the poorest people in the world. Improving the capacity for self-development improves life chances for everybody touched. And, if anybody is better off, we’re all better off.
The Global Uplift Project promotes Effective Altruism by building small-scale, high impact projects in the developing world. These include classrooms, medical clinics, water systems, science labs, playgrounds and other projects that improve life chances for some of the poorest people in the world. 100% of every dollar donated to TGUP goes to the donor’s intended project.
