‘Dr. BumBum’ gets his butt thrown in jail after patient death

The Brazilian celebrity plastic surgeon nicknamed “Dr. BumBum” was busted this week — five days after he went on the run following the death of one of his patients who died after a procedure to enlarge her derrière, according to a new report.

Dr. Denis Cesar Barros Furtado was arrested Thursday at an office complex in Rio de Janeiro’s Barra de Tijuca neighborhood, TIME reported. His mother, Maria de Fatima Barros, who worked with him, was also arrested.

Lilian Calixto fell ill Saturday night during the procedure at Furtado’s Rio de Janeiro home.

The doctor brought her to the Hospital Barra D’Or, but the 46-year-old married mom died early Sunday, police said, according to the BBC.

A judge issued a warrant for the arrest of the 45-year-old celebrity doc on homicide charges — but he’d vanished. Cops arrested his girlfriend, Renata Fernandes Cirne, on suspicion of taking part in the procedure.

Furtado, who has appeared on Brazilian TV, had nearly 650,000 followers on his since-deleted Instagram account and an active Facebook page filled with before-and-after shots of butt enlargement procedures.

But Niveo Steffen, president of the Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society, told AFP he believed “Dr. BumBum” wasn’t completely legit, saying there was a “growing invasion on non-specialists” in the industry.

Furtado told reporters gathered at the police station Thursday that he was innocent of any wrongdoing.

“There was an occurrence with the patient,” he said.

In a video aired by Brazil’s G1 news portal, Furtado said, “A fatality has occurred — a fatality that could happen to any doctor.”

His lawyer, Naiara Baldanza, said in a statement that “any conclusion regarding the death of Lilian Calixto and my client’s responsibility in this fatality is premature.”
