U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the U.S. District Court, District of Kansas will welcome 50 candidates as new U.S. citizens during a special ceremony Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park celebrating Independence Day. The proceedings are set to take place Sunday, July, 3 at 5:45 p.m. right before Sporting KC takes on the NYC Red Bulls. This ceremony is part of USCIS’ Independence Day celebration and the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. USCIS says it will welcome new U.S. citizens at naturalization ceremonies across the country from July 1 through July 8.Ana Lewin was one of the 50 candidates who became a U.S. citizen on Sunday. She came to Kansas from El Salvador 13 years ago and said today was special for her and her family. “I think this is a big one, so I am happy that it is a lot of countries and a lot of people doing this and we are able to gather and be together to do this,” Lewin said. “It’s a special thing for us.”She came with her husband and two children. After the ceremony, they watched the Sporting KC game. The citizenship candidates originate from 27 countries: Algeria, Brazil, Burma, Canada, China, Congo (Kinshasa), Cote d’Ivoire, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, France, Lithuania, Granada, Guatemala, Guinea, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Venezuela and Vietnam. They live in Fort Leonard Wood, Fort Riley, Gardner, Junction City, Kansas City, Lawrence, Lenexa, Manhattan, Olathe, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Shawnee, Topeka and Waynesville. "Ceremonies at iconic locations like Children’s Mercy Park, where major league soccer games are played, not only make these events meaningful for those who have voluntarily chosen to participate in American democracy and dedicated themselves to the country’s future, but they also reflect the strength and spirit of the United States," U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a press release Thursday. USCIS encourages new citizens and guests to share their naturalization ceremony experiences and photos through social media, using the hashtag #NewUSCitizen.
