Shatto Milk Company teams up with Lidia’s, Kansas City’s Big Picnic, and more: KC’s food and drink events for July 16-22

Monday, July 16

Tuesday, July 17

Enjoy $8 craft cocktails and free bar snacks from 4 to 11 p.m. tonight (and every Tuesday night) at Freshwater (3711 Summit). Each week, the resurrected midtown restaurant is offering this aperitivo program for customers that sit at its bar. Featured cocktails will change week to week based on seasonally available ingredients. 

Wednesday, July 18

Chef Dan Swinney of Lidia’s Kansas City (101 West 22nd Street) is crafting a dinner tonight featuring Shatto Milk Company’s milk, butter, cheese, and ice creams. Among the options for the five-course meal: a 30-yolk Tajarin pasta with Shatto butter, grana padano, and Shatto cream; a potato- and leek-filled cheese crisp made with Shatto Perrin cheese, and a heritage pork loin braised in Shatto milk. Wednesday marks the latest in the series of cocktail courses at Tom’s Town Distilling Company (1701 Main Street). Tonight’s class, which runs from 7-8:30 p.m., focuses on “bastard cocktails,” which are made with fridge leftovers. Tom’s Town mixologist and bartender Michael Arkett will be teaching. The class is $30, and tickets can be purchased here

Dogs are welcome on the porch tonight from 4-10 p.m. at Cleaver & Cork (1333 Walnut Street) for “Wags & Wine.”  Bottles of wine are half price, and food specials for both humans and dogs will be available. Limit is two dogs, and they must be leashed. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Unleashed Pet Rescue.

Thursday, July 19

Out in Lawrence, Genovese (941 Massachusetts Street) is hosting a five-course specialty dinner featuring beers from Martin City Brewing Company. Kansas corn fritters, fried smelt tacos and chicken, beef, and pork barbecue are on the menu The dinner is $60 a person, not inclusive of tax and gratuity. Call 785-842-0300 for reservations.

Friday, July 20 

Ruins Pub (1715 Main Street) is hosting a benefit beer battle today from 7 to 10 p.m. The first keg to blow — either from Public House or Mother’s Brewing Company — earns its brewer bragging rights, and all proceeds go to KC Pet Project. 

Saturday, July 21

As the weather continues to feel tropical, the food may as well be, too. Up in Liberty, Morning Day Cafe (6 East Franklin Street) will be hosting a luau-themed party, complete with pig roast and specialty cocktails. The party is available for all to attend and runs from 6 to 10 p.m.

Sunday, July 22

Spread out on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak Street) for Kansas City’s Big Picnic, which runs today from 4 to 8 p.m. The event features lawn games, live music, and food trucks, including J&R’s Hot Dog Cart, El Tenedor KC, Taco Republic, KC Pinoy, Taste of Brazil, Kona Ice, Peaceful Pig, Poppy’s Ice Cream Truck, Monk’s Roast Beef, Savanna Jane Lemonade, and more. 

In the evening, head out to Powell Gardens (1609 NW US Hwy 50, Kingsville) for the latest in the Missouri Barn Dinner Series at the Heartland Heritage Garden. Tonight’s dinner features the talents of chef Remy Ayesh (Cafe Sebastienne, Repeal 18th). Ayesh is planning a three-course family-style dinner featuring fresh vegetables from the Heartland Harvest Garden as well as a number of “spoonable” house-made condiments prepared by Ayesh for the meal. The night begins with a cocktail hour, followed by a tour of the garden and then the meal in the barn at Powell Gardens. Tickets are $75 a person, and include drinks, tax and gratuity.
