Health Ministry: Brazil approaching 600,000 COVID-19 deaths

BRASILIA, Brazil: In a 24-hour period last week Brazil recorded 24,611 new cases of COVID-19, along with 648 deaths, the country's health ministry stated.

According to the ministry's statistics, 21.3 million cases have been recorded in Brazil since the pandemic began, while the official death toll rose to 592,964, ranking the South American country in third place globally in cases, behind the U.S. and India, and second globally in deaths behind the U.S.

Due to the rising vaccination rate, the seven-day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths has dropped to under 20 percent of the peak daily death toll of almost 3,000 in April.
